Benefits of CBD Skincare - A Conversation with Dermatologist, Dr. Jeannette Jacknin

The Science Behind Skincare & CBD - Interview with board-certified dermatologist, author, national speaker, and consultant specialising in topical cannabinoids and skin disorders, Dr Jeannette Jacknin.

In a recent interview, acclaimed dermatologist, Dr. Jeannette Jacknin, sat down with Medterra to talk about CBD and the potential benefits of using it in Skincare. CBD has the potential to offer many benefits for the skin, including anti-aging properties. Below is the transcript from the interview:

"The Science Behind Skincare & CBD

“Cannabinoid receptors have been discovered in keratinocytes, or skin cells, and other parts of the skin, such as the sebaceous glands, hair follicles, small nerves, and immune cells. CBD interacts with them as part of the skin’s endocannabinoid system,” explains Dr. Jacknin. “In other words, CBD may support health and beauty on multiple levels throughout the body.” One study in 2007 identified that cannabinoids inhibit the overproduction of skin cells that could play a role in helping skin health.

What Effect Does CBD Have on Skin?

In 2014, research found that CBD behaves as a highly effective sebostatic agent. In other words, it has a positive effect on humans because it lubricates and waterproofs the skin.

What Are the Biggest Health Benefits of CBD?

Dr. Jacknin pointed out that, “One important thing to note is that CBD works differently on different people, based on our body’s natural reaction.”

But, when used properly, CBD may have significant health benefits. Dr. Jacknin adds, “Because CBD is such an anti-inflammatory agent and inflammation can be responsible for aging the skin and beyond, incorporating it into a routine is very beneficial.”

Anti-aging benefits aren’t the only boost CBD gives your skin. Dr. Jacknin states, “The anti-inflammatory properties of CBD appear to improve symptoms for many patients dramatically. Recent studies found that applying a high-quality CBD topically can improve symptoms of acne, eczema, psoriasis, dermatitis, wounds, itching, and other rarer skin problems. I’ve seen particular efficacy for treating dry skin and fine lines, making CBD a great ingredient for all skin types.

In addition to that, CBD also boasts these benefits as Dr. Jacknin adds, “CBD has also proposed benefits for those with acne scars, signs of aging, and otherwise uneven or blemished complexions. Because of the omega-3 fatty acids found in hemp, CBD can be derived. Consumers often find that their skin is beautifully moisturized and radiant when using cannabidiol-infused skincare products.”

How Long Does It Take to Notice Benefits from CBD Skincare Products?

Dr. Jacknin states, “After application of CBD products, some have noticed visible improvements in their skin within days – feeling more hydrated and reducing any inflammation.”

Here are Dr. Jacknin’s CBD Skin Application Tips

Dr. Jacknin recommends, “As with any topical, apply to a small area to test for irritation before using.” As with any new product you’re applying to your skin for the first time, it’s best to start small and adjust based on your skin’s response.

The Future of CBD & Skincare Is Bright

According to Dr. Jacknin, CBD in skincare is here to stay. But, it may take a different form. Dr. Jacknin explains, “Experts are developing specialized creams for acne, psoriasis, and more by incorporating additives based on the dermatological concern at hand. More research is also being done on other cannabinoids for skincare, such as CBG (cannabigerol) and CBDA (cannabidiolic acid).”

If you’re incorporating CBD into your skincare, choose a brand with trustworthy and reputable third party testing.
